GoKnot would not have been possible if it wasn't for the commercial and custom programs with which it shares modules: CGD, MAI, standard MAI clients such as the console, the HTML browser, the spreadsheet window, .. These programs have evolved since 1989 and have always been directed to European or English speaking markets. What I try to say is: The parts GoKnot is made of use 8-bit wide strings. With such modules, Asian languages, except Romanji (Japanese with roman letters) would require a huge work to be implemented.

    This is why I make two different proposals:
  • For any European language (except Russian with Cyrillic charset and Greek with Greek charset) or Romanji (see Languages using an ISO-8859 charset)
  • For Asian languages in their original charsets (see Languages using 16-bit Unicode charsets).


Languages using an ISO-8859 charset (European)


    A complete translation requires translating:
  • GoKnot menu
  • GoKnot dialogs
  • GoKnot help
  • CGD message strings (some languages already available)
  • GoKnot's modules message strings (some languages available)
  • GoKnot message strings
  • Setup dialogs
  • Setup message strings

    If you plan to translate, download it, translate at least the menu and the dialogs and contact me.

    I will publish in the website that a version in your language is being prepared. Of course, only one version per language is wanted. If someone wants to translate a language already being translated, I will forward the email to the first translator and he/she may decide if help is wanted or not. The first translator's word is final. If, after a reasonable time, the first translator does not finish the translation, the version in his/her language will be free for any translator again.

    You may decide not to translate everything. It is better than nothing to have just the menu and the dialogs, but, if you decide to do an incomplete translation and someone else volunteers to do the rest of the job: either you both reach an agreement to share the job, or you do the remaining translation yourself, or the version in your language will be assigned to the new translator. In this case, the new translator will have to re-translate the parts already done to avoid copyright problems.

    What will you obtain translating?

    You own the copyright of the translation and you get 50% of the registration fees of users in your language. You have two options:
  • You create your own GoKnot website in your language. I will link to your website from the main GoKnot site to direct users in your language. You place a PayPal link to register users in your website. You will cash the registration fee and transfer 50% of the amount to the author, together with the registered user ID for the Users Database. I will mail the registration patcher (Which is mainly a "Thanks Giving program" that removes the "You have been using .." message, since all GoKnot features are always available.) directly to the user. GoKnot registration is forever, registered users get the patcher automatically each time a version is released. All registered users get exactly the same treatment, no matter how they registered.
  • I include the program in your language in the main GoKnot site. Users register with me and I transfer 50% of the registration fee to you.

    You may also change your initial choice. E.g., start at the main GoKnot site and, after some time, create your own site.

Languages using 16-bit Unicode charsets (Asian)

This does not apply to Asian languages with roman characters. To translate to Asian languages with roman characters the previous note should be applied.

    As explained above, it is not a trivial task to implement 16-bit strings in all GoKnot objects. The handicraft way in which GoKnot is distributed, i.e. by (few) volunteer registration of mindful users could never finance that work. Therefore, to implement truly Asian versions of GoKnot, you should be in a position to do a business proposal to this author. Note that, compared to implementing 16-bit strings, modifying whatever GoKnot features you wish is easy job. You should read the note "GoKnot may be easily downsized" here.

    If you are an Asian GoKnot enthusiast, understand that GoKnot can be modified to fit your requirements (including, of course, a new name), you know the Asian market and want to invest in a GoKnot-based Go program for the Asian market, I am open for proposals. Of course, "Asian-GoKnot" would be commercialized the way you decided. What you have to finance are: the hours required to do whatever modifications necessary and an amount for the selling rights. That amount will be reasonable, as mentioned, GoKnot is mainly a hobby I don't expect getting rich from this.
